Ethan Richard (Rick)'s Story

First let me say that I'll always regret not knowing how to ask Sally Bakken or Patti Mann for a date while in high school. There were others, too, but those two in particular were especially beautiful, very nice, good friends, and also smart (even though Sally was so quiet only a few of us knew how smart she was). And now that I know more about myself and life in general (I was pretty unsure and shy then), I think maybe they'd have said "yes"! Ah, the regrets of being so complete an idiot in high school ! At the time I thought I had no chance whatsoever (why would they even consider going out with me?), and all my friends confirmed I was right ("Of course they won't go out with you...why would they? They could go out with anybody they wanted, and anyway, I heard she's got a boyfriend at another school !). I mean really, what are friends for if not to keep you from totally humiliating yourself? OK, that's off my chest. To make a long story short, everything worked itself out better than fine. College at Eastern was a complete blast, my military career after Eastern was short, sweet, and spent in Europe with my new wife (soft-spoken, thoughtful, beautiful, bright, funny Alvarita, whom I met the summer after high school...we married 3 1/2 years later), my family has been fabulous, and my work career very rewarding. So here's a quick synopsis: Eastern Washington, BA (In journalism, for any of you who might remember my tumultuous stint at West Valley as sports editor, reviewer of plays, columnist, etc.) Military (Infantry Officer...finished as a Captain...Airborne, 25 jumps; trained with Special Forces in Bad Tolz, Germany on temporary assignment). Europe for 1 1/2 years, lots of travel to lots of different countries. Back to school for Masters (Interpersonal Communication/Organizational Development), Ohio University. Worked in Student Life at Ohio U., Illinois State University, University of Detroit Moved back to Northwest (Tacoma) to work at Pacific Lutheran University, where I ended up as the Vice President and Dean of Students. Started a family after moving back to Northwest (two boys, Ethan and Travis; Ethan is a computer genius who owns his own company and has developed over 100 Apps for the iPhone, and Travis is an outstanding young architect for NBBJ in Seattle; NBBJ designed SAFECO Field for the Mariners and Travis is now one of the leads on the Amazon.com HQ block in Seattle). Completed my second Masters and a Doctorate in Public Administration at the University of Southern California (commuted there via train and plane for 6 years while working at PLU). Went to work for the Washington State Department of Community Development, managing state housing programs (helped start up the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, although the real workhorse was a brilliant guy named Ben Bonkowski); also developed and administered the statewide Governor's Housing Conference in Yakima (but the real workhorse there was a very sharp woman named Charmaine Mortenson). After a couple of years of being semi-effective and frustrated at the State, went to work at the local level...Expand for more
as the Director of Community Action for Pierce County. Helped start up most of the ECEAP (Early Childhood Development) programs in Pierce County, and helped to expand Head Start and helped lead the development of a network of Family Support Centers. Also worked on welfare reform issues, and won a national award which had me ending up making a presentation to the other 49 states on a panel at the White House in Washington, DC, with Vice President Al Gore as the moderator. That was pretty fun. Then I got recruited by a headhunter to apply for the job of president of United Way of Pierce County (Tacoma), and got that job in 1993. I'm still here. We raise about $10-$12 million a year in resources to help people in need and work on big issues like Early Learning, Affordable Housing, and Health Care Access (all supported by private personal donations and corporate donations and foundations). We are trying to build one of the most advanced Early Learning communities in the United States in Tacoma/Pierce County. Also established the only multi-school-district County in the USA where every high school offers a Varsity School Letter for Community Service (145 hours in a year) in partnership with United Way; nearly 600 students earned their Varsity Letter in Community Service in 2013, and about 4,000 have earned the Varsity Letter in Community Service since its implementation. Also helped develop a dental program for children with no health care, matching them up with private sector dentists; over 20,000 children found permanent dental care doctors. I'm too fat, but other than that I'm happy and healthy with a great family and now four wonderful grandkids (three girls and a boy, who is the eldest). I'm learning how to cook (as close to gourmet as possible...I've a long way to go), am a die-hard Mariner fan (more agony than ecstacy), attend the Seattle International Film Festival every year with a film-buff friend of mine (20-25 movies in a week), still jog, swim, and lift weights, collect art and WWII original posters, travel (have been in all 50 states and most of western and some of eastern Europe, the British Isles, the Nordic countries, Mexico, Australia, China, Greece, and Turkey), read, play bad golf, work on recipes, and whatever else seems right at the time. I'm hoping to write a book or two in retirement; we'll see how that plays out. We have a small vacation home in Arizona and will be going down for a few months each year (Spring Training for the M's since 1986). Of course, I've shared little of the bumps and bruises along the way. They were there (I suspect this holds for almost all of us). But I'm still here, and overall it's been one great ride; my time at West Valley has been a part of that, which I remember fondly (mostly). I didn't move to Spokane until the 8th grade, and started at the old Argonne High School as a freshman. Every year for the past 30+ years, a group of us guys (and spouses), mostly all West Valley homeroom friends and golf team members, meet in Leavenworth for a weekend of lies about high school and college, and play bad golf and eat good food.
